Best Instagram auto reply and DM automation tools (September 2026)

Nine tools that send or answer Instagram DMs for you, ranked, with checked pricing. They are not interchangeable. Broadcast tools blast campaigns to thousands of contacts; contextual tools answer one customer asking about Friday. We build Christine, one of the nine, so we put it first and spelled out who should skip it.

What is Instagram DM automation?

Instagram DM automation is software that replies to Instagram direct messages for you through Meta's official messaging API. It ranges from keyword bots that send a canned link when someone comments a trigger word, to contextual AI that reads each message and answers from your own prices, availability and tone. Paid plans run about $14 to $99 a month. None of the nine tools below ask for your Instagram password; they connect through Meta.

How to choose: sort your inbox first

Look at your last 30 DMs and sort them into two piles. Pile one is campaign responses: people commenting a keyword to get a link or enter a giveaway. Pile two is customer questions: "how much", "when are you free", "do you do X".

If pile one dominates, you want a broadcast or comment-to-DM tool: ManyChat, LinkDM or Chatfuel. They move volume cheaply, and nobody expects a canned link to feel personal.

If pile two dominates, keyword bots will cost you money. Keyword flows convert around 2-5% of DM leads, because one typo or rephrase breaks the flow and the lead goes cold. Personal-style contextual replies convert 35-40% of the same leads. One studio we work with went from 8% to 31% booked after swapping a keyword bot for contextual AI. For that inbox, look at Christine, SetSmart or Inro.

1. Christine

$29/mo flat

Best for service businesses whose DMs are booking questions

Yes, this is our page, and Christine is ranked first because for one inbox type it wins. We will say which. If your Instagram DMs are mostly "how much for a volume set", "do you have anything Saturday" and "can I move my appointment", Christine was built for you: salons, lash and nail artists, tattoo studios, car detailing, that kind of business.

Christine reads each message and answers from your price list, in your tone, in whatever language the client writes, at 3 pm or 3 am. No keyword triggers, no flow builder. Booking happens inside the DM: during setup we build a custom integration with the booking system you already use, so confirmed appointments land on your existing calendar. It plugs into your existing Instagram account through the official Meta API.

Pricing

$29/mo flat with a 7-day free trial. No contact counting, so a viral post does not change the bill.

Where it falls short

  • No broadcast campaigns. You cannot message your whole follower list about a promo.
  • No comment-to-DM giveaways or "comment WIN" mechanics.
  • Not built for agencies managing many accounts or for creators running growth funnels. For those, ManyChat below is the better pick.

2. ManyChat

From $14/mo (250 contacts)

Best for creators, agencies, and broadcast campaigns

ManyChat is the biggest name in Instagram automation and the default for comment-to-DM campaigns. Someone comments a trigger word on your Reel, ManyChat sends them a link. Giveaways, story-mention replies, broadcasts to your contact list, across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and SMS.

Pricing was overhauled on March 2, 2026. Five tiers now: Free (25 active contacts), Essential $17/mo ($14 annual) for 250 contacts, Pro $39/mo ($29 annual) for 2,500, Business $69/mo for 7,500, Advanced $139/mo for 25,000. Every paid plan adds per-contact overage past the cap, $0.10 per extra contact on Essential and $0.05 on Pro. Billing is by active contacts per month, which is why one Reel that pulls 500 people into a flow can double that month's bill.

Pricing

From $17/mo monthly or $14/mo annual (Essential, 250 active contacts) up to $139/mo (Advanced, 25,000). Overage $0.05-0.10 per extra contact. The free tier is real but limited: 25 active contacts, keyword triggers, comment-to-DM, ManyChat branding.

Where it falls short

  • Keyword flows are robotic and break when someone types a free-text question instead of the trigger word.
  • Active-contact billing plus overage fees means a good month on Instagram is an expensive month on ManyChat.
  • Support is email-only and users report slow response times.

3. Chatfuel

$49/mo (AI PRO)

Best for multi-channel keyword flows with a real free plan

Chatfuel is one of the original Messenger bot builders and now covers Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. The free Light plan includes automated replies, a flow builder, a shared inbox, and contact management, which makes it one of the more generous free options for basic keyword automation.

The paid AI PRO plan adds an AI sales agent, an AI knowledge base, broadcasts, and lead qualification funnels. It runs $49/mo billed monthly, about 29% less on yearly billing, with a free trial available.

Pricing

Light plan free. AI PRO $49/mo billed monthly, cheaper billed yearly. Usage limits apply on AI features but the exact numbers live on a separate limits page, not the pricing page, so check them before committing.

Where it falls short

  • Flow-builder first. The AI layer is an add-on on top of keyword logic, not the core of the product.
  • AI usage limits are opaque; you have to dig for the actual caps.
  • No booking logic of its own. It qualifies leads, then hands off.

4. Tidio

From $29/mo + Lyro AI extra

Best for e-commerce sites where Instagram is one channel of many

Tidio is a live chat and helpdesk platform that added Instagram as a channel. Your website chat, email, Messenger, and Instagram DMs land in one inbox, and the Lyro AI agent can answer common questions from your help content. For an online store already running Tidio on its site, adding Instagram is easy.

Pricing stacks, though. Plans run Free, Starter at $29/mo, Growth at $59/mo, then jump straight to Plus from $749/mo with nothing in between. Lyro AI costs extra, from $39/mo for 100 AI conversations. On the Free and Starter plans you get 50 Lyro conversations total, lifetime, not per month.

Pricing

Free plan with 50 conversations/month. Starter $29/mo, Growth $59/mo, Plus from $749/mo. Lyro AI is a separate add-on from $39/mo for 100 AI conversations. A realistic setup with Growth plus Lyro lands well over $100/mo.

Where it falls short

  • Instagram is a side channel, not the focus. Comment-to-DM and IG-specific mechanics are thin.
  • The AI you actually want costs extra on every plan, and the included Lyro allowance on cheap plans is 50 conversations ever.
  • The gap between $59 and $749 leaves growing teams with no middle option.

5. LinkDM

Free, Pro $19/mo

Best for budget comment-to-DM link delivery

LinkDM does one job: someone comments on your post, Reel, or story, and it DMs them a link. The free plan covers 1,000 DMs a month on one account, with LinkDM branding on messages. Pro at $19/mo raises the cap to 25,000 DMs across 3 accounts, removes the branding, and adds comment auto-reply and email capture.

The billing model is the quiet win. LinkDM charges per DM sent, not per contact, so a viral Reel eats into your monthly allowance instead of permanently inflating your bill the way contact-based tools do.

Pricing

Free: 1,000 DMs/mo, 1 account, branded messages. Pro: $19/mo, 25,000 DMs, 3 accounts. Platinum+: $99/mo, 300,000 DMs, 10 accounts.

Where it falls short

  • It delivers links. It does not hold a conversation or answer questions.
  • No AI, no booking, no lead qualification.
  • Fine for creators dropping lead magnets, wrong tool for a business answering customers.

6. Inro

From €12.99/mo

Best for creators and coaches who want AI replies cheap

Inro is an Instagram-native tool from a French team that leans on AI replies rather than flow builders. The free plan covers 100 active contacts a month with 3 automations, which is enough to actually test it on a small account. Pro starts at €12.99/mo for 500+ active contacts and scales automatically as your audience grows.

It sits between the keyword bots and the expensive AI setters: cheaper than SetSmart, smarter than LinkDM, with campaigns and a CRM built in.

Pricing

Free: 100 active contacts/mo, 3 automations, 50 AI credits. Pro from €12.99/mo with auto-scaling contact tiers. Annual Pro €1,249/year at 10,000+ contacts/mo. Managed accounts from €200/mo.

Where it falls short

  • Auto-scaling pricing means the bill grows with your audience, similar in spirit to contact-based billing.
  • Smaller and newer than ManyChat, with a thinner template and integration ecosystem.
  • No native booking-system integration; it qualifies and hands off.

7. SetSmart

$99/mo (1,000 AI messages)

Best for high-ticket coaches booking sales calls

SetSmart is an AI appointment setter. A GPT-powered agent reads each DM, asks qualifying questions, handles objections, and books sales calls onto your calendar, across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. It behaves less like a chatbot and more like a junior salesperson working your inbox.

At $99/mo for 1,000 AI messages it is priced for offers where one closed deal covers the year, which is exactly the coaching and high-ticket service market it targets.

Pricing

$99/mo including 1,000 AI messages, usage-based pricing above that, no setup fees. 7-day free trial, credit card required.

Where it falls short

  • Overkill for a salon answering price and availability questions.
  • The 1,000-message cap matters if your inbox is high volume and low ticket.
  • Sales-call framing throughout; it books calls, not services or appointments in your existing booking software.

8. Besmi

Pro $15/mo, Icon $25/mo

Best for lash and beauty artists wanting booking plus AI in one

Besmi is a booking platform for lash artists and beauty pros, built by a lash artist and a developer who are married. The free Artist plan gives you a branded booking link, calendar, card payments, and unlimited bookings. Pro at $15/mo adds the AI receptionist, which answers inquiries, books and reschedules appointments, and nudges lapsed clients to rebook, plus SMS reminders and deposits.

The catch is architectural: the AI lives inside Besmi's own booking and messaging system. You are moving your booking flow onto their platform, not adding a brain to your existing Instagram inbox.

Pricing

Artist plan free forever. Pro $15/mo, Icon $25/mo (auto-rebooking, multiple locations, priority support), first month free on paid plans. Extra team seats $5/mo each.

Where it falls short

  • The AI receptionist works within Besmi's platform rather than answering everything in your IG DMs directly.
  • You have to adopt Besmi as your booking system to get full value.
  • Beauty-vertical only; wrong fit for detailing, tattoo, or anything outside beauty.

9. Customers.ai

Pricing on request

Best for website visitor identification, not really DMs anymore

Customers.ai is the company formerly known as MobileMonkey, and its InstaChamp product was once a well-known Instagram DM tool. The company has since pivoted hard into website visitor identification and ad retargeting for e-commerce: its homepage is about turning anonymous shoppers into customers, and InstaChamp survives as a footnote.

It stays on this list because it still ranks for Instagram DM searches and people keep asking about it. If you came here for DM automation, this is no longer that product.

Pricing

No public price list. Pricing runs through a calculator keyed to your Klaviyo profile count, with a contact-sales step for exact numbers. 7-day free trial, no card required.

Where it falls short

  • DM automation is legacy functionality, not the roadmap.
  • No transparent pricing; you have to talk to sales.
  • Built for e-commerce visitor identity, so most service businesses are outside the ICP entirely.

Instagram DM automation for free

Free options exist and some are usable. What you get for $0:

  • ManyChat's free tier gives you keyword triggers and comment-to-DM with ManyChat branding, capped at 25 active contacts on the 2026 plans. Treat it as a demo, not a plan.

  • LinkDM's free plan covers 1,000 DMs a month on one account with LinkDM branding. The most usable free option for comment-to-DM link delivery.

  • Inro's free plan covers 100 active contacts a month, 3 automations and 50 AI credits. Enough to test AI replies on a small account.

  • Chatfuel Light is a free flow builder with automated replies across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. No AI on the free plan.

  • Tidio's free plan covers 50 conversations a month plus 50 lifetime Lyro AI conversations. The lifetime cap runs out fast.

  • Christine and SetSmart both run 7-day free trials. Neither has a permanent free tier.

Free tiers cover link drops and keyword replies well. No free tier answers real customer questions from your own price list. If your inbox is questions, budget $15-29/mo; that is the current floor for contextual answering.

Frequently asked questions

Is Instagram DM automation allowed by Instagram?

Yes, when the tool uses Meta's official Instagram messaging API, which is how every tool on this list handles Instagram. You connect through Facebook login and Meta knows the automation is running. Ban risk comes from browser-automation tools that take your Instagram password and simulate a logged-in human; Instagram detects and blocks those. If a tool asks for your Instagram password instead of a Meta connection, walk away.

Will clients notice they are talking to a bot?

With keyword bots, usually yes. Menus, buttons and canned lines read as automation at once, which is fine for campaign responses and jarring for customer questions. Contextual AI tools that answer in your tone are much harder to spot; replies read like you on a fast day. Whatever you pick, test it on yourself first: send a vague question with a typo and see what comes back.

How much does Instagram DM automation cost?

Free options exist for link delivery and keyword replies (LinkDM at 1,000 DMs/mo, ManyChat's 25-contact free tier). Paid tools run roughly $14-99/mo. Flat-rate tools like Christine ($29/mo) and SetSmart ($99/mo) cost the same whatever your audience size. Contact-based tools like ManyChat start cheap and climb as contacts accumulate. Check which model you are signing up for before a viral post decides for you.

Can DM automation book appointments, not just reply?

Some tools can. Christine books inside the DM against the booking system you already use, via a custom integration built during setup. SetSmart books sales calls onto your calendar. Besmi books within its own platform, which you adopt as your booking system. ManyChat, Chatfuel, LinkDM, and Tidio can send a booking link but do not complete the booking in the conversation.
