ManyChat pricing in 2026: what the bill looks like
ManyChat changed its pricing on March 2, 2026. Two plans became five, billed on active contacts, with per-contact overage on every paid tier. If you got here by searching "manychat too expensive" or "manychat pricing trap", the math below is where the feeling comes from.
One disclosure first. We build Christine, a flat-rate ManyChat alternative for service businesses, so read the last section with that in mind. The prices come from ManyChat's own pricing page, checked against breakdowns by SetSmart, InstantDM and CreatorFlow between July and September 2026.
The 2026 plans
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price, per month | Active contacts included | Overage per extra contact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 25 | none, sending stops |
| Essential | $17 | $14 | 250 | $0.10 |
| Pro | $39 | $29 | 2,500 | $0.05 |
| Business | $69 | around $55 | 7,500 | lower per contact |
| Advanced | $139 | around $110 | 25,000 | lower per contact |
Two details most reviews skip. The prices on ManyChat's pricing page are the annual rates, so the $14 plan you saw costs $17 month to month, 18 to 30 percent more across the tiers. And an active contact is anyone who touches your automation that month. A single comment on a Reel that triggers a DM counts. Someone who asks about a sale once and never writes again still counts for that month.
Manychat AI, the feature that answers questions instead of matching keywords, comes with Pro and above. Essential gets the flow builder and keyword triggers.
What the bill looks like in practice
The headline price is what you owe in a quiet month. The real number shows up the month a post does well.
A lash tech on Essential has one Reel go semi-viral. 500 people comment the trigger word and get a DM. That is 500 active contacts: 250 included, 250 at $0.10. Bill: $17 + $25 = $42 for the month.
A salon on Pro runs a steady 3,000 contacts a month. 2,500 included, 500 at $0.05. Bill: $39 + $25 = $64, every month.
A creator on Pro runs a giveaway that pulls 8,000 people into a flow. 5,500 over the cap at $0.05. Bill: $39 + $275 = $314 for one month, or an upgrade to Business.
One Reddit user with 8,000 contacts built through comment CTAs described opening a bill of "almost $100" after three months on what they had understood to be a $15 plan. That thread, "ManyChat's new billing is honestly a scam", sits in r/WhatsappBusinessAPI and r/FacebookAds. A second one in r/automation, 71 comments, is mostly people trading workarounds, the main one being a monthly bulk-unsubscribe of inactive contacts so they stop counting.
ManyChat's own blog answers this, and the answer is fair as far as it goes. Under the old cumulative model a viral spike raised your contact count for good; under active contacts it is a one-month event. They also suggest setting an overage limit in your account so a spike pauses sending instead of billing you. If you stay on ManyChat, do that today.
Is ManyChat too expensive?
Depends what your DMs are.
If your inbox is campaign responses, people commenting "LINK" to get a guide, giveaway entries, broadcast replies, then no. Contact-based pricing scales with the reach you are paying for, and nothing else does comment-to-DM at ManyChat's depth. The bill is a marketing cost and it tends to pay for itself.
If your inbox is customer questions, "how much for a full set", "anything Saturday after 4", "do you do end-of-lease cleans", then you are paying per person for a tool that answers them with a menu. In our research across service-business communities, keyword flows convert roughly 2 to 5 percent of those leads, while replies that read like the owner convert 35 to 40 percent. For that inbox ManyChat is expensive at any price, because the cost is the bookings the menu loses, not the subscription.
What the free plan covers
Twenty-five active contacts a month, two channels (Instagram and Messenger), basic keyword triggers, ManyChat branding on your messages. At contact 26, sending stops until next month.
It is a demo. Good for learning what DM automation feels like, not something to run a business on. Older accounts still showing 1,000 free contacts are on the legacy model, which ManyChat has said it will migrate.
The flat-rate alternative for service businesses
Christine costs $29 a month. One price, no contact counting, no overage. A Reel that brings 500 people into your DMs costs the same as a quiet week.
The bigger difference is what the money buys. ManyChat matches keywords and runs the flow you drew. Christine reads the message and answers it from your price list and calendar, in whatever language the customer writes, then moves them to a booking inside the DM. There are no flows, so there are no branches to fall out of.
| ManyChat | Christine | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $17 to $139 plus overage | $29 flat |
| Billed on | Active contacts per month | Nothing, flat |
| Bill after a viral post | Higher, or sending paused | Same $29 |
| How it replies | Keyword match, pre-built flow | Reads the message, answers from your prices |
| "How much for X on Saturday?" | Fallback menu unless you built that branch | Price and the next opening, in one reply |
| Languages | One flow per language | Any, automatic |
| Setup | Build every flow branch | Paste your services and prices |
| Comment-to-DM, broadcasts | Yes, best in class | No |
| Best for | Creators, agencies, campaigns | Salons, lash and nail techs, tattoo, cleaners, photographers |
Feature-by-feature breakdown: Christine vs ManyChat.
How to switch from ManyChat to Christine
About 20 minutes. Nothing about your Instagram account changes.
1. Pull your answers out of ManyChat. Open your main flow and copy every reply that contains a fact: prices, services, hours, address, deposit policy, cancellation rules. Paste them into a plain text note. That note is your price list. If your flows are the usual price / booking / FAQ tree, ten minutes.
2. Connect Christine to the same Instagram account. Start the free trial, connect Instagram through Meta's official login (the same permission screen ManyChat used), and paste the note into Christine's knowledge editor. She rewrites it into a structure she can answer from and shows you the result before anything goes live.
3. Hand over the inbox. Meta routes each Instagram DM to one app, so once Christine is live, disconnect the Instagram channel in ManyChat under Settings, Channels. Want to keep comment-to-DM campaigns? Leave ManyChat on the Free plan for those and let Christine answer the conversations. Then cancel the paid plan from Billing; it runs to the end of your current period.
Test before you cancel anything. Send your own account a vague question with a typo, "hey how much r ur sets n u got anything sat", and see what comes back. That is the message ManyChat's flow never handled.
7-day free trial, no charge until it ends, then $29 a month. Less than one month of Pro overage.
ManyChat pricing FAQ
Does ManyChat charge per message? No. Per active contact per month: each person who interacts with your automation counts once, however many messages you exchange. WhatsApp adds Meta's own per-conversation fees on top.
What happens when I go over my contact limit? On paid plans you are billed overage, $0.10 per contact on Essential and $0.05 on Pro, unless you set an overage limit in your account, in which case sending pauses. On Free, sending stops at 25.
Can I cut my ManyChat bill without downgrading? Yes, by keeping contacts inactive. People in ManyChat communities run an automation that unsubscribes anyone who has not interacted in 30 days. It works. It is also a sign the pricing model is making you do its work.
Is Manychat AI extra? Included on Pro ($39/mo) and above. Not on Essential.
Is there a cheaper ManyChat alternative for Instagram? For comment-to-DM link delivery, LinkDM has a free plan billed per DM sent. For answering customer questions from your own prices, Christine is $29 flat. The best Instagram auto reply tools list compares nine with current pricing.
