You're probably not leaving Fresha because of the software

Let's get one thing out of the way before you compare features. Christine is not booking software. It will not replace your calendar, your POS, or your client records. If that surprises you, good, because most pages ranking for "fresha alternative" are booking platforms pretending they invented something new.

Here is what Christine actually is: an AI that answers the Instagram DMs of salons, lash techs, nail techs, tattoo artists, and detailers. It replies the way you would, off your real price list, 24/7, in any language, and gets the booking done inside the DM. It plugs into the Instagram account you already have.

So why is this page on a Fresha comparison? Because a lot of people typing "fresha alternative" into Google are not actually angry at Fresha's calendar. They are angry at the fees, and underneath that, they are losing money in a place no booking platform can reach: their inbox.

Why people search for a Fresha alternative in 2026

Fresha built its brand on "subscription-free" software. That ended. In 2025 Fresha changed its pricing model, and as of 2026 the numbers look like this (US rates, verified August 2026):

FeeAmount
Independent plan (one person)$19.95/month
Team plan$14.95/month per bookable team member
New client via Fresha marketplace20% of the sale, minimum $6
Card processing, in person2.29% + $0.20 per transaction
Card processing, online2.79% + $0.20 per transaction
Card processing, manual entry3.30% + $0.20 per transaction
SMS reminders past the free 20/monthroughly $0.15 per text

The 20% marketplace fee is the one that fills Reddit threads. A new client finds you on the Fresha marketplace, books an $80 lash set, and $16 of it is gone before you pick up a tweezer. Ten marketplace clients a month is $160 in commission on top of the subscription and processing. Fresha's defense is fair: returning clients are free, and bookings that come through your own website, Google profile, or social links carry no commission at all. Only marketplace-sourced new clients pay the 20%.

That last detail matters more than most people realize. Hold that thought.

The problem a new booking app will not fix

If Fresha's fees are your only complaint, and your clients happily click booking links, you have a shopping decision, not a strategy problem. Go compare Vagaro, Booksy, and Timely. Vagaro runs about $30/month for a solo operator with no marketplace commission on new clients. Booksy and Timely have their own trade-offs. Any of them can hold your calendar. This page will not pretend otherwise.

But be honest about where your bookings actually start.

For most beauty and body-art businesses on Instagram, they start in the DMs. "Hey how much for a full set?" "Do you have anything Saturday?" "Do you do covers on old tattoos?" The client did not click your booking link. They messaged you. And every booking platform, Fresha included, answers that moment the same way: paste your link and hope.

That hope has a measurable cost. In our research across beauty-business communities, one nail tech reported getting fewer bookings after she started forcing DM clients over to a booking link. The friction cut both ways: the link was supposed to save her time, and instead it gave people a step where they could quietly disappear. They asked in the DM because they wanted to talk to a person. Sending them to a form is a soft no.

The conversion numbers back her up. Generic auto-DM tools (the "thanks for reaching out, here's my link" kind) convert around 2-5% of DM leads. Replies that sound like the owner, answer the actual question, and handle booking in the same thread convert around 35-40%. Same leads. Ten times the bookings. The difference is whether the conversation stays a conversation.

Switching from Fresha to Vagaro moves your calendar. It does not answer the 11pm "u free tmrw?" message. Nothing on that SERP does.

What Christine does instead

Christine sits inside your existing Instagram account and answers DMs like you would. Not from a script tree. From your actual price list, your services, your policies, your tone. You feed it what you charge and how you talk; it handles the rest.

A message comes in at 11:40pm asking about a volume set. Christine answers with your real price, asks the two questions you always ask, offers times, and confirms the appointment inside the DM. The client never leaves the thread. You wake up to a booked slot instead of a cold lead who messaged three competitors after you didn't reply.

It answers in whatever language the client writes in. It does not sleep, take Sundays off, or leave people on read during back-to-backs. And it integrates with whatever booking system you keep, Fresha included. Every account gets a custom-built integration during setup, so confirmed appointments land in your calendar instead of a chat log. Christine is not asking you to migrate anything.

There is even a fee angle here that Fresha users should sit with. Bookings that arrive through your own social channels are commission-free on Fresha. A client Christine converts in your DMs is your client, from your channel. She never touched the marketplace, so the 20% fee never enters the picture. Getting better at converting your own DM traffic is, mechanically, the cheapest way to shrink your Fresha bill without leaving Fresha.

Where Fresha wins: running the business behind the appointment. Calendar, deposits, no-show protection, product sales, client history. If you need software to operate a salon, Fresha is legitimately good at that, which is why millions of appointments run through it.

Where Christine wins: the moment before the appointment exists. The DM. Fresha has no answer for it, and neither do the platforms competing with Fresha.

The math for a solo lash tech

Say you average $80 a ticket and your Instagram gets 60 DM inquiries a month. Numbers vary; the structure doesn't.

Handling DMs yourself, you answer when you can. Between clients, at night, half of them hours late. Late replies leak. If you convert even 20 of those 60, you are doing better than most, and you spent maybe an hour a day typing the same five answers.

With a link-blast auto-responder converting at 2-5%, you book roughly 2-3 of the 60. That is the tool the nail tech above fired. (Keyword bots like ManyChat have the same ceiling; we compared them separately.)

At personal-reply conversion rates of 35-40%, 60 inquiries is 21-24 bookings, around $1,700-1,900 in monthly revenue, answered in seconds instead of hours, with zero of your time spent typing. Christine costs $29. One recovered $80 booking covers it nearly three times over.

None of that math changes based on which booking platform holds the calendar.

What's better than Fresha?

Depends entirely on why you are asking, so here is the short honest version.

If you want lower software fees with the same job done: Vagaro is the most common answer, around $30/month solo, no new-client commission, strong feature set. Booksy is stronger in barbering and has its own marketplace (with its own boost fees, read the fine print). Timely is polished and popular with UK and AU salons. Any of these is a reasonable Fresha replacement.

If your bookings start in Instagram DMs and you are losing them to slow replies and link friction: none of the above helps, because they all live after the conversation. That gap is what Christine covers, and you can run it next to Fresha or next to any of Fresha's competitors.

Is Vagaro better than Fresha? For a solo operator upset about the 20% new-client fee, often yes: Vagaro's flat monthly price with no marketplace commission is easier to predict, and its toolset matches Fresha's for most independents. Fresha argues back with a slicker interface and the marketplace itself, which does send some businesses real new clients. If marketplace discovery genuinely feeds you, 20% of a new client you'd never have met can be a fine trade. If it mostly reclassifies people who found you on Instagram anyway, it is an expensive leak. Check your Fresha reports and see which one you are.

Who should do what

Keep Fresha and add Christine if the marketplace or the software earns its keep but your DMs are a graveyard of "hey how much" messages you answered six hours late. This is the most common case we see. Total cost: Fresha's fees plus $29.

Leave Fresha for Vagaro, Booksy, or Timely if your clients book by link without complaint and the 20% fee is genuinely your biggest leak. You do not need Christine for that move. You need an afternoon and a data export.

Do both if you are leaving over fees and your DMs are also where clients start. Migrating your calendar while still leaving DM leads on read just moves the same revenue leak to cheaper software.

Skip Christine if you get a handful of DMs a week and enjoy answering them. At low volume, you are the best version of this product. Come back when replying starts costing you bookings.

Frequently asked questions

Does Christine replace Fresha? No. Christine does not do calendars, client records, payments, or POS. It answers and converts your Instagram DMs, then books the client into whatever system you run. Fresha and Christine work side by side without conflict.

Can Christine book appointments into my Fresha calendar? Yes. Christine handles the booking conversation inside the DM, and we build a custom integration with your booking system during setup, Fresha included, so the appointment lands on your calendar. You keep whatever system you already use; nothing migrates.

Do bookings from my DMs get hit with Fresha's 20% fee? No. Fresha's new-client fee applies to clients who discover you through the Fresha marketplace. Clients from your own social channels are commission-free under Fresha's own rules. A DM lead Christine converts came from your Instagram, not their marketplace.

Is there a free Fresha alternative? Truly free booking software with card processing is mostly gone; Fresha itself dropped its free model in 2025. Square Appointments still has a free tier for solo users if free is the hard requirement, with its own processing rates. Be suspicious of "free" anywhere in this category: the money comes out somewhere, usually per transaction.

Will clients know it's an AI answering? Christine replies off your prices, your policies, and your phrasing, so it reads like you on a fast day. You can always jump into any thread yourself; it is still your Instagram inbox.

What does Christine cost? $29/month, 7-day free trial, no contract. For comparison, two of Fresha's minimum $6 marketplace fees cost more than half of it.

Try it against your own inbox

You do not have to take conversion numbers from a comparison page. Christine has a 7-day free trial. Connect the Instagram account you already run, load your price list, and let it answer a week of real inquiries. Count the bookings against your last normal week.

If the DMs were never your problem, you will know by Wednesday, and Vagaro's export tools await. If they were, you just found the leak no booking platform was ever going to plug.
